This is our first foray into Conscious Hip Hop featuring Chants frontman Kevin Fraser of Yesai & Chief Black Fox. The song started its journey as a simple melody created by Jamie Papish with the Hey Ya lyrics we've used in the past. After hearing a recording of Kevin rapping with his cousin, Jamie asked Kevin to create a rap on this song for the verse. Within 2 days, Kevin came with the rap that was perfect. We then felt we had a song worth working on. The song continued to develop with Kevin creating chorus lyrics that named the song. The next big development was to add the penetrating and inspired words of Lakota Chief Black Fox to ground the song in indigenous wisdom. The song then needed an additional element of beauty, and singer, violinist Jenni Asher's harmonies and violin playing was the perfect complement. We then brought in our mix engineer Henrik Jakobsson who helped develop the structure and added bass and additional percussion. We were now ready to replace electronic drums with a live funky kit drummer and we got world class player Dave Allen to knock it our of the park. As Kevin and Jamie continued to mix the song, Kevin began feeling the words of Chief Black Fox so deeply that he emerged with the passionate finally vocals soaring over the repeating Hey Ya motif. Kevin then heard a lead guitar to compliment the power and energy of the finally. Jamie called on multi-string player Asher Levy who added a soulful solo and rhythm guitar that complemented the song perfectly. Additional guitar parts were added by Shane Burroughs giving the song a very rock based ending. We then brought in mix & master engineer Andy Kravitz who brought out the clarity and power of the vocals and made the track ready for prime time.
